Swanepoel Cleared to Play in England Despite Looming CSA Disciplinary Action

South African allrounder Beyers Swanepoel has been granted a no-objection certificate (NOC) by Cricket South Africa (CSA), clearing the way for him to represent Worcestershire County Cricket Club in the 2026 County Championship. However, the player still faces disciplinary proceedings from CSA over his controversial departure from domestic side Lions.

Swanepoel’s NOC was issued following the termination of his contract with the Lions, allowing him to officially join Worcestershire. The English county confirmed the development on Sunday, stating that Swanepoel has already begun training with the squad and is expected to be available for their upcoming home fixture against Kent County Cricket Club starting April 24.

The clearance comes despite an ongoing investigation into Swanepoel’s conduct during the One-Day Challenge final. The allrounder left the match with seven overs remaining to catch a flight to the United Kingdom, without informing team management. His abrupt exit forced the Lions to finish the game with only ten players, ultimately losing to the Titans on the penultimate ball. Swanepoel had completed his full quota, taking 3 for 44, before departing.

CSA has charged Swanepoel with a Level 4 offence for bringing the game into disrepute. If found guilty, he could face a suspension ranging from five four-day matches to ten one-day matches. It remains unclear whether any potential sanction would affect his stint in England or be enforced upon his return to South Africa.

Questions also remain over the circumstances surrounding his travel arrangements, including who booked his flight on the same day as the final. Swanepoel’s deadline to respond to the charges passed on April 9.

Currently unattached to any domestic side in South Africa, Swanepoel still has the opportunity to secure a contract before the local contracting window closes on May 4.

Meanwhile, Worcestershire had initially been without Swanepoel for their opening matches of the season against Derbyshire and Middlesex due to the delay in obtaining his NOC. The club temporarily signed Oliver Hannon-Dalby on loan from Warwickshire as cover.

Despite the off-field uncertainty, Swanepoel is now set to resume his cricketing duties in England while awaiting the outcome of CSA’s disciplinary process.
