Rana Fined for Obscenity, Gaikwad Penalised for Slow Over-Rate in CSK vs DC Clash
Nitish Rana has been fined and handed a demerit point for using an “audible obscenity” during the Indian Premier League 2026 match between Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Delhi Capitals (DC) in Chennai.
Rana, who was not part of DC’s playing XI after a string of low scores (15, 0, and 5), was stationed in the dugout when the incident occurred. During a crucial stage of the match, Tristan Stubbs — batting on 60 off 36 balls — requested a change of gloves with DC needing 32 runs from the final two overs. When the request was denied, Rana was seen engaging in a heated exchange with fourth umpire Anish Sahasrabudhe, during which he used inappropriate language.
Stubbs was dismissed shortly after, bowled by Jamie Overton without adding to his score, as DC eventually fell short by 23 runs. Rana later admitted to the offence and was fined 25 percent of his match fee, along with a demerit point added to his disciplinary record.
Meanwhile, CSK captain Ruturaj Gaikwad was also penalised at the conclusion of the match for maintaining a slow over-rate. He was fined INR 12 lakh, marking CSK’s first such offence of the season.
Gaikwad is now the third captain to face a slow over-rate penalty in IPL 2026, following Shubman Gill of Gujarat Titans and Shreyas Iyer of Punjab Kings. Iyer has already been fined twice this season for similar offences.
The match highlighted both disciplinary and performance issues for DC, while CSK secured a comfortable win despite the over-rate penalty.
