Akash Madhwal is a right-arm pacer from Roorkee who trained alongside Rishabh Pant under coach Avtar Singh. Interestingly, Madhwal played only tennis-ball cricket until the age of 24 before earning recognition during a trial noticed by former Uttarakhand head coach Wasim Jaffer. He was subsequently drafted into the Uttarakhand state team in 2019 and made both his First-Class and T20 debuts in the same year. Adapting quickly to leather-ball cricket, Madhwal’s impressive performances led to him being appointed captain of Uttarakhand’s T20 side ahead of the 2023 season. His major breakthrough came in IPL 2022 when he was signed by Mumbai Indians as a replacement for the injured Suryakumar Yadav. He made his IPL debut in the following season and impressed with 14 wickets, earning praise for his deadly yorkers in the death overs. Madhwal grabbed national attention with a sensational spell of 5/5 in 3.3 overs against Lucknow Super Giants in the IPL Eliminator, setting a record-breaking performance. Although retained by Mumbai Indians for IPL 2024, his form dipped slightly. Nevertheless, his skiddy pace, ability to hurry batters, and knack for executing pinpoint yorkers continue to make him a promising fast-bowling prospect for the future.
