Tom Alsop Joins Gloucestershire on Three-Year Deal Amid Sussex Financial Restructuring

Gloucestershire have secured the signing of top-order batter Tom Alsop on a three-year contract, with the 30-year-old set to join the club at the end of the current season following Sussex's ongoing financial challenges.

Alsop becomes the latest player to leave Sussex after the club was placed under special measures by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), prompting cost-cutting measures and spending restrictions. His departure follows those of promising fast bowler Henry Crocombe and experienced all-rounder Fynn Hudson-Prentice.

Sussex head coach Paul Farbrace acknowledged that the club's financial situation played a decisive role in Alsop's exit.

"Our financial situation has made it necessary for Tom to move on," Farbrace said, thanking the batter for his "great service, on and off the field" during his time at Hove.

Alsop admitted the decision to leave was difficult but said securing his family's future was the priority.

"Despite exploring possibilities, it's with a heavy heart that I've made this decision, knowing that the picture is uncertain over my future here with the club's financial position," Alsop said.

"I've loved playing for Sussex and I intend to remain a Hove resident long-term. However, I've got to think about my family and what's best going forward. At this stage of my career, security is very important, and Gloucestershire's offer provided that."

The left-handed batter also expressed his excitement about joining Gloucestershire, highlighting the club's long-term vision under director of cricket Jon Lewis.

"I'm delighted to sign for Gloucestershire. Jon Lewis has a clear vision of where the club wants to get to, and hopefully I can play my part in that. Being a Wiltshire lad, it'll also be nice to be closer to home," he said.

Alsop began his county career at Hampshire before joining Sussex on an initial loan deal in 2022, later making the move permanent. He has been one of Sussex's most reliable red-ball performers, averaging 37.59 in first-class cricket for the county and scoring six centuries, including a career-best unbeaten 182 against Leicestershire.

However, opportunities in the County Championship have been limited this season, with Alsop making just two appearances as Sussex opted for Tom Clark at No. 3.

Despite that, he featured in every match of Sussex's T20 Blast campaign, although the club finished bottom of the South Group. Alsop is currently representing Sunrisers Leeds in The Hundred and brings valuable franchise experience, having also played for Trent Rockets, Australia's Big Bash League, and the ILT20.

Gloucestershire director of cricket Jon Lewis welcomed the signing, describing Alsop as an experienced and versatile batter capable of making an immediate impact.

"Tom is a fantastic batter with the ability to perform across all formats. His experience in franchise cricket and the domestic game makes him a fantastic addition to our squad," Lewis said.

"He has been a consistent performer for Sussex, Trent Rockets and Hampshire, while also showing great resilience in the County Championship. With his strong links to the West Country, it's a delight to bring him to Bristol. Tom will be an important figure in our dressing room as we continue to develop this squad."

Alsop's arrival is expected to strengthen Gloucestershire's batting lineup, while his departure marks another significant change for Sussex as the club navigates a challenging period off the field.
