Samson Century, Hosein’s Four-For Hand CSK Record Win Over Mumbai Indians
Chennai Super Kings produced a dominant all-round performance to hand Mumbai Indians their biggest defeat by runs in Indian Premier League history, powered by a stunning unbeaten century from Sanju Samson and a four-wicket haul from Akeal Hosein.
In what was billed as an “IPL El Clasico,” the clash lived up to its hype, but the result was one-sided as CSK outplayed MI in all departments.
Samson anchors CSK with masterclass
Batting first at Wankhede Stadium, CSK built their innings almost entirely around Samson, who remained unbeaten on 101. The wicketkeeper-batter displayed both composure and aggression, adapting his tempo as wickets fell around him.
Despite a strong start in the powerplay, where CSK raced to 73 for 2, the middle order faltered. None of the other batters crossed 22, putting the onus squarely on Samson. He shifted gears smartly—slowing down when needed to preserve his wicket, then accelerating late in the innings.
His assault in the death overs proved decisive. Targeting debutant Krish Bhagat, Samson smashed 31 runs across the 16th and 20th overs, finishing with a flurry of boundaries and sixes to bring up his second century for CSK in just seven innings.
Tactical battle early on
Mumbai initially showed tactical awareness, with captain Hardik Pandya quickly switching to spin after conceding heavily with pace. The move brought brief success, including key wickets of Shivam Dube and Ruturaj Gaikwad, both struggling for form this season.
A quickfire cameo from Dewald Brevis threatened to swing momentum back to CSK before he was dismissed for 21 off 11. However, MI failed to maintain pressure consistently, leaking runs at crucial moments.
Hosein and spin attack dismantle MI
In response, Mumbai’s batting collapsed dramatically against CSK’s spin attack, led by Akeal Hosein. The left-arm spinner returned figures of 4 for 17, dismantling the middle order and setting the tone early with a wicket-maiden in the powerplay.
Hosein, alongside Noor Ahmad, exploited the conditions expertly. Using angles and variations, they triggered a collapse that saw MI lose wickets in clusters.
Eight Mumbai batters were dismissed for single-digit scores, with nine wickets falling to spin—an IPL record at Wankhede Stadium.
Despite early resistance from Quinton de Kock, who briefly attacked Hosein, MI never recovered. The innings unraveled quickly as batters struggled to counter the turning ball and mounting pressure.
High intensity, historic result
The match, featuring some heated moments—including an on-field exchange between Tilak Varma and Jamie Overton—highlighted the intensity of this historic rivalry.
However, it was CSK who ultimately stamped their authority with both bat and ball. Samson’s brilliance and Hosein’s clinical spell ensured a comprehensive victory that not only boosts CSK’s campaign but also marks a low point in MI’s storied IPL history.
