Joe Root Guides Welsh Fire to Comfortable Win Over Birmingham Phoenix in The Hundred

Joe Root produced a calm and unbeaten half-century to lead Welsh Fire to a seven-wicket victory over Birmingham Phoenix at Edgbaston, keeping his side's strong run in The Hundred alive.

Despite the presence of minority investor and England football star Jude Bellingham at the toss and in the stands, Birmingham Phoenix were unable to deliver a winning performance. Instead, it was England Test captain Joe Root who stole the spotlight with a composed unbeaten 58, steering Welsh Fire to their third win in four matches.

Fresh from having his return to the England Test captaincy confirmed by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), Root anchored the chase with trademark composure as Welsh Fire reached the target of 138 with four balls to spare.

Speaking after the match, Root praised his team's all-round performance.

"That's how you want to play cricket, being ruthless and getting it done at the end. We've got a lot of depth in different areas, a lot of bases covered and good variety in our attack," he said.

"We've also got a good understanding of how we want to chase down totals. If we can make Cardiff a very difficult place for visiting teams, it will go a long way towards helping us reach the latter stages of the tournament."

Promoted to open the innings in place of the injured Matt Short, Root shared a crucial 77-run opening partnership with Phil Salt. Salt struck an entertaining 46 off 36 balls, including four sixes, after receiving an early reprieve when Saqib Mahmood overstepped with a front-foot no-ball.

Rachin Ravindra struggled to accelerate on a difficult batting surface before falling to Chris Wood, leaving Welsh Fire needing 42 runs from the final 31 deliveries. Jordan Cox then played an important cameo of 20, handling Pakistan mystery spinner Usman Tariq confidently and helping Root guide the chase to the finish.

Earlier, Birmingham Phoenix posted 137 for 9 after struggling to build substantial partnerships. Joe Clarke top-scored with 35, while Rehan Ahmed showed brief promise before being involved in two costly mix-ups that halted the innings.

Jordan Cox also made a significant impact in the field, taking two outstanding self-relay catches to dismiss Will Owen and Clarke.

Welsh Fire's bowling attack once again showcased its depth, with Marco Jansen and Lockie Ferguson claiming two wickets each. Using five international bowlers, Fire consistently applied pressure and restricted Phoenix to a below-par total.

Although Birmingham Phoenix fought hard to defend the target, Root remained in complete control. Needing five runs from the final over, he reverse-scooped Mahmood for a boundary before sealing victory with a composed single.

The win strengthens Welsh Fire's playoff hopes, while Birmingham Phoenix have now suffered three consecutive defeats and are likely to need victories in their remaining four matches to stay in contention for the knockout stage.
