Matt Short Stars as Welsh Fire Defeat Southern Brave to Stay in The Hundred Title Race

Matt Short marked his return from injury with an unbeaten half-century as Welsh Fire secured a comfortable victory over Southern Brave in The Hundred, maintaining their strong start to the campaign with a fourth win in five matches.

After missing Fire's previous game against Birmingham Phoenix due to a minor injury, the Australian all-rounder returned to the top of the order and produced a composed unbeaten 60, guiding his side to a successful chase of 116 on a challenging surface at Sophia Gardens.

Reflecting on the conditions, Short described the pitch as "spicy," praising both teams' fast bowlers for exploiting the assistance on offer. He noted that batting became easier under lights as dew settled in and the ball lost its shine.

Earlier, Welsh Fire's decision to bowl first paid immediate dividends. Chris Woakes and Sam Cook struck early, reducing Southern Brave to 2 for 2 inside the opening seven balls as Jamie Smith and Ben McKinney edged behind to wicketkeeper Phil Salt.

Cook continued his impressive spell by dismissing Nikhil Chaudhary, while Rachin Ravindra dealt further blows by removing Tristan Stubbs and Moeen Ali in consecutive deliveries. Southern Brave struggled to build momentum, reaching just 45 for 3 at the halfway stage.

Marcus Stoinis provided the only significant resistance, compiling a fighting half-century from 35 balls to revive the innings. However, his dismissal to Sam Cook halted the recovery, with the seamer finishing with outstanding figures of 3 for 14.

David Miller added a late flourish with two sixes before becoming Matt Short's first wicket of the innings, while Jofra Archer struck a six off his first delivery but fell on the very next ball. Southern Brave eventually finished on 115 for 8, their lowest total in The Hundred.

Defending a modest target, Archer made an ideal start by dismissing Phil Salt with the first ball of the chase and maintained relentless pressure in his opening spell. However, Matt Short and Joe Root steadied the innings with a crucial partnership of 60, taking Welsh Fire within touching distance of victory.

Although Root, Rachin Ravindra and Jordan Cox departed before the finish, Tom Kohler-Cadmore provided valuable support, allowing Short to anchor the chase. Short reached his fifty from 37 balls with an inventive scoop off Archer and consistently used the ramp shot to good effect before guiding Welsh Fire home.

The victory completed Welsh Fire's season double over Southern Brave and kept them level with Trent Rockets at the top end of The Hundred standings, strengthening their push for a place in the knockout stages.
