Jordan Cox Marks England Test Call-Up with Unbeaten 184 for Essex

Newly selected England squad member Jordan Cox celebrated his call-up for next week's second Test against New Zealand with a magnificent unbeaten 184, steering Essex into a commanding position on the opening day of their Rothesay County Championship clash against Leicestershire at Uptonsteel Grace Road.

The 25-year-old wicketkeeper-batter produced a dazzling display after Essex recovered from an early collapse to finish the rain-affected day on 342 for 5 from 75 overs. Cox's innings, combined with Matt Critchley's 97, transformed the match after the visitors had slumped to 8 for 2 on a green pitch.

Earlier in the day, play was delayed by rain and a wet outfield before Leicestershire captain opted to bowl first in conditions expected to favour seamers. The decision initially appeared justified as Ben Green struck twice inside the first eight overs, dismissing Paul Walter leg before wicket and bowling former South Africa captain Dean Elgar.

However, Cox quickly shifted the momentum in Essex's favour. Fresh from being named in England's 15-man squad for the second Test at The Oval, he counterattacked brilliantly, reaching his century in just 73 deliveries. His innings featured 14 boundaries and two sixes, highlighting the confidence that has earned him another opportunity at the international level.

Despite already representing England in white-ball cricket, Cox is still awaiting his Test debut after injuries previously denied him selection on two separate occasions. His latest call-up comes despite limited recent red-ball cricket, having not played a first-class match since July last year and featuring in only four matches across all formats since February.

Cox's innings also carried personal milestones, becoming his 12th first-class century and taking him beyond 4,000 career first-class runs.

He first shared a crucial 147-run partnership for the third wicket with Essex captain Tom Westley, who contributed 41 before falling shortly after tea, pulling a delivery from Rehan Ahmed directly to short midwicket.

Undeterred, Cox continued his dominance alongside Critchley. The pair added 183 runs for the fourth wicket, effectively batting Leicestershire out of the contest for much of the day. Critchley looked destined for a century of his own before Joey Evison, currently on loan from Kent, bowled him for 97.

Leicestershire's bowlers struggled to maintain consistency throughout the day and were further hindered by missed opportunities in the field. Critchley received an early reprieve when Rehan Ahmed was unable to hold a difficult caught-and-bowled chance, while Cox survived on 146 after being dropped at short extra cover.

The hosts managed a late breakthrough when Ahmed dismissed nightwatchman Jamie Porter, but the wicket offered little consolation after a frustrating day in the field.

Leicestershire, currently bottom of Division One and still searching for their first Championship victory of the season, entered the match hoping to avenge a seven-wicket defeat to Essex at Chelmsford before the Vitality Blast break. However, Cox's outstanding innings placed Essex firmly in control heading into day two.

Both teams were also forced to contend with player absences. Essex were without key seamer Sam Cook, who is sidelined with a fractured wrist, while Leicestershire made eight changes due to injuries and player unavailability. Captains Ian Holland and Wiaan Mulder are among those absent as they participate in Major League Cricket in the United States.

With Cox unbeaten overnight and Essex already well positioned, the visitors will look to build an even more imposing first-innings total when play resumes.
