Jofra Archer Stars as Southern Brave Defeat London Spirit to Keep Hundred Playoff Hopes Alive

England fast bowler Jofra Archer produced a match-winning spell of 4 for 9 as Southern Brave secured a crucial five-wicket victory over London Spirit at Lord's, strengthening their chances of reaching the knockout stage of The Hundred.

After being asked to bat first by Southern Brave captain Chris Jordan, London Spirit struggled to build momentum on a challenging surface. Jonny Bairstow top-scored with a determined 56, but received little support from the rest of the batting line-up.

At the halfway stage, Spirit were 52 for 2, with Bairstow battling for fluency. Adil Rashid also made history during the innings, surpassing Tymal Mills to become the leading wicket-taker in the men's Hundred competition after finishing with figures of 2 for 17.

Bairstow reached his half-century from 40 deliveries before Southern Brave's bowlers triggered a dramatic collapse. Archer and Marcus Stoinis shared the spoils, each claiming two wickets in consecutive deliveries, as Spirit lost their final five wickets for just two runs and were bowled out for 105 with eight balls remaining.

Chasing a modest target of 106, Southern Brave made a shaky start. David Willey dismissed Ben McKinney for a first-ball duck before removing Nikhil Chaudhary. Jamie Smith counterattacked with a fluent 36, including a towering six into the scoreboard, but his dismissal to James Coles slowed the chase.

Adam Zampa tightened the screws in the middle overs, dismissing Moeen Ali, while Stoinis was run out at the non-striker's end, leaving Brave in trouble at 60 for 5.

South African pair David Miller and Tristan Stubbs then steadied the innings with a composed partnership. Miller remained unbeaten on 39, striking the decisive boundary as Southern Brave reached the target with three balls to spare.

The victory keeps Southern Brave firmly in contention for a place in the Eliminator, while London Spirit now face an uphill battle to qualify for the knockout rounds.

Named the Meerkat Match Hero, Archer expressed his delight after the match.

"I'm delighted that we got the win today. It's the first time I've taken more than two wickets in the tournament. Everyone has been bowling well. We haven't taken huge numbers of wickets, but we've done a great job of keeping the runs down," Archer said.

Reflecting on the chase, he added, "You always think a small target will make for an easy game, but we seem to make it difficult for ourselves."
