England Fast Bowler John Turner Retires at 25 Due to Persistent Back Injury

London: England fast bowler John Turner has announced his retirement from professional cricket at the age of 25, bringing an early end to a promising career after persistent back injuries.

The Hampshire pacer, who represented England in four international matches during the 2024 tour of the West Indies, revealed that recurring fitness issues—particularly a back stress fracture that has kept him out of action since June last year—played a major role in his decision.

Turner, who still had two years remaining on his Hampshire contract and previously held an ECB development contract, made two One-Day International (ODI) and two Twenty20 International (T20I) appearances for England, claiming three wickets. Despite his brief international career, he earned a reputation as one of the country's exciting young fast bowlers through consistent performances in domestic cricket.

In a statement, Turner described the decision as one of the most difficult of his life.

"It was always my dream to play professional and international cricket, and doing so for Hampshire and England has been nothing short of living out those childhood dreams," Turner said.

"The stress fracture, which has sidelined me for over a year, along with my injury record, made me think seriously about my future both as a cricketer and beyond the game. I decided this was the right time to pursue my next challenge."

A graduate in Economics and Finance from the University of Exeter, Turner indicated he is ready to move on to the next phase of his career outside professional cricket.

The South Africa-born pacer attended Hilton College before moving to the United Kingdom for university through his British passport, inherited via his English mother. He joined Hampshire in 2021 following a successful trial and earned his first England call-up in 2023 after impressive performances in The Hundred.

Although he excelled in white-ball cricket, Turner found limited opportunities in Hampshire's County Championship side, making just seven first-class appearances for the club. He also featured in three County Championship matches on loan for Lancashire in early 2025 before injuries once again interrupted his progress.

Reflecting on his time with Hampshire, Turner expressed gratitude to the club for its unwavering support.

"The five years I spent as a professional cricketer with Hampshire have been the greatest of my life. From the day I joined the club, everyone welcomed and supported me. The opportunities and belief they showed in me are something I will always be thankful for."

Hampshire Director of Cricket Giles White praised Turner's contribution, describing him as an exceptionally talented cricketer whose career was cut short by unfortunate circumstances.

"John has been an important part of a successful era for Hampshire, contributing to four T20 Finals Day appearances, County Championship title challenges, and two One-Day Cup finals. While we are saddened by his decision, we wish him every success in the next chapter of his life and look forward to welcoming him back to the club in the future," White said.

Turner's retirement marks the premature end of a career that showed significant promise, with injuries ultimately preventing the young fast bowler from fulfilling his full potential on the international stage.
