Birmingham Phoenix Edge Trent Rockets in Six-Hitting Thriller at Edgbaston

Birmingham Phoenix delivered a stunning batting performance to defeat Trent Rockets by 10 runs in a high-scoring Hundred clash at Edgbaston, treating a packed home crowd to an unforgettable contest featuring 29 sixes across both innings.

Phoenix posted a commanding total of 214, powered by a relentless display from their top order. Joe Clarke led the charge with a scintillating 68 off 33 balls, while Will Smeed added a rapid 51 from 28 deliveries. The duo laid a strong foundation by racing to 54 runs in the opening 25 balls.

After Clarke's dismissal with the score on 104, Rehan Ahmed continued the assault, smashing five sixes, while captain Donovan Ferreira added a destructive cameo of three sixes in just nine balls. Birmingham's innings featured 17 sixes, equalling the tournament record, with every member of the top six striking at more than 180.

Facing a daunting target of 215, Trent Rockets mounted an explosive response. Openers Ben Duckett and Finn Allen blasted an unbeaten 54-run stand during the powerplay, keeping the required run rate within reach.

However, Birmingham's Pakistan spinner Usman Tariq shifted the momentum by dismissing Allen with a clever off-break that was caught by Scott Currie at long-on. Currie then removed Duckett with a delivery that jaged off the surface to find the edge, leaving the Rockets without their two in-form openers just short of half-centuries.

Tariq continued to impress, producing a disciplined spell that included the crucial wicket of Tim David, who managed just two runs before edging behind to wicketkeeper Joe Clarke.

Despite the setbacks, Tom Banton kept the chase alive with a blistering 67 off 32 balls, but his late assault proved insufficient as Trent Rockets finished on 204, falling 10 runs short.

Among the Rockets' bowlers, Calvin Harrison emerged as the standout performer, conceding only 27 runs from 20 balls while claiming two wickets. Harrison also entertained with the bat, smashing consecutive sixes off the final two deliveries of the innings to finish with a remarkable strike rate of 600.

Clarke Praises Team's Aggressive Approach

Named the Meerkat Match Hero, Joe Clarke credited Birmingham's batting depth for allowing the top order to attack from the outset.

"We've got licence at the top of the order with our strength in depth. We got the team off to a good start and then the big hitters came in at the end and gave us extra momentum," Clarke said.

Reflecting on his innings, he added:

"I didn't want to get out being defensive, so I thought I'd be ultra-aggressive, tried to put them off their lengths and luckily it came off in my favour."

Clarke also praised teammate Usman Tariq for his match-winning spell.

"It's interesting! I've spent the last few days keeping to him in the nets, trying to work out which balls are which, so it's going to be a hell of an experience through the tournament. He's been quality, and a very good 20 balls from him tonight."

The victory gives Birmingham Phoenix an early boost in The Hundred, highlighting both their explosive batting firepower and the impact of Tariq's clever spin as they look to build momentum in the tournament.
